Territories of Practice-Text Image

Since I was young, I liked talk with other people, listening to them, and counselling with them. Once I started having conversation with people, I was unaware of the passage of 2 or 3 hours. That make me know about the communication importance among the people. For me, telling the story is fun. I can tell my opinion to somebody, I can also express and tell my feelings, and I was able to give my knowledge to somebody. That is why people around me tell me that you must be good at announcer, VJ, teacher or counselor.

It is natural for me to have an interest in the important elements of communication; language, sound, and signal. Among them, expression mode of text included in the language has always been difficult for me. Text has been a biasedly recognized as a design field related to practical academia rather than communication work in my head. Looking for origins of text in various countries, it is identifiable that characters in Egypt or China expressed the communication in a format of image since humans started communicating with each other and recorded them as a course of development of hieroglyphics. Therefore, text is regarded as the most typical image of drawing and hence an image for communication. However, when I was unable to exactly identify how to express text in my work because it is a promised sign and also standardized in human society, the class “Territories of Practice – Text Image’ was of a welcoming rain to me.

Since they were precious works preserved in the storage of the British Museum, I was unable to take a picture of them. However, I was satisfied by leaving a simple sketch of them that only I was able to identify

Fred Wilson (American, b.1954) 575 x 480

Among them, there was a work that attracted me. It was the work in 1954 by an artist named Fred Wilson that performed in the field creating work in a theme of realizing the history and culture in each period as well as racial discrimination as an African-American from US exhibition by participating in Venice Biennale in 2003. This work expressed how the ink, an element for oriental drawing, spread in the shape of water drop or fungus on the white rice paper based on direct lettering of lines in styles that might be shown on poetic diction from novels by Moby-Dick or Claude McKay and works by Shakespeare. How the ink was spread out to the white rice paper was very effective and painting-type of image expressing African-American that was regarded as dirty fungus on Caucasian-dominating society, and direct and realistic lettering applied on it served as a role of delivering the powerful story and the meaning and also representing one efficient work that graphic drawing and design-based text were well harmonized. This work expressing the society with racial indiscrimination related to lack of communication without understanding the difference of Caucasian and African-American inspired me much in terms of whether to express behind themes of my work through efficient visual works with text along with theme of ‘communication.’

Communication:communication like fabric

communication like fabric

The media art and drawing technique can deliver a message to the audiences to facilitate the communication with sympathy. In such way, the media can embrace artistic imagination while the art can widen its passage of communication, so the theme of communication can be expressed effectively once it is portrayed not by a single field but in combination of both art and media. I want to establish the foundation of my work on the old concept of the art, ‘Pictorialization Reappearance’ while adopting diverse media.

My art work shows what “communication” is. Life is given only once to everyone, and you creates your own story using the single chance by interacting with surroundings as a member of the society. In the story, you establish a connection to someone, and the threads of connections are used to produce a woven fabric as the full story of life.

Each tiny episode is combined to be the behind story of us. Cherished relationship and memories are stored in us, and they will be shared again when retrieved from our archive later on. They become a real communication among us. They will provide us different experience than simple conversation with strangers or about immature stories. An artificial behavior may be produced with special efforts. Every conversation among people will be evaluated for its value that becomes parts of a large scale story like a woven fabric with the artificial ones. The time of death may be interpreted as the completion of the fabric of life story, and you can complete the story of your life through communication of the fabric with others.

Kommunikologie.

 Kommunikologie

Is the communication an instinct of human?

You began to communicate with others as a child able to express his/her intention though he/she cannot perceive the notion of death. Thereafter, you confirm your identity continuously through communication with someone. However, it is hard to perceive that everyone will be confronted by death. Actually, in other words, you communicate with others endlessly to avoid the fear of death. Germany’s famous philosopher Wilhelm Flusser described the follwing in his book ‘Kommunikologie.’ Human communication is not a natural and instinctive behavior such as natural body languages (by moving tail or other body parts that represents infestation in indicating food location) of insects such as bees or ants but made intentionally and repeatedly to adapt to the society after born in the terrain It may be interpreted as a communication to forget that they are only lonely existence facing death and to demonstrate himself/herself. Contrast to the natural communication of insects, it is an artificial behavior. Therefore, he considered communication in an image of connecting thread (just as the primitive form of telephone consisted of two paper cups and thread) or a piece of fabric, well woven with crossing opinions, conversations, and arguments It can be an alternative form of giving and taking, or it may be a unilateral action of the fixed listener and talker. Communication is not confined in wording and writing but open to diverse media such as body language, facial expression, eye contact, and other forms of delivering message. The format is by no means critical. The communication described by Wilhelm Flusser is defined as an artificial mean of fulfilling survival instinct as a social member throughout his or her lifecycle.

Nam June Paik was interested in the method of communication and historical change and he was also pay attention to the fact that new technology can change of human environment and also can change communication between human and human. As a title of exhibition “From to Christo”, this is his one of his writing title on 1981. In this writing, he predicts after generation of television and video and he insists that real communication method can be strength of sprit such as telepathy. You can find his intention constantly from his video art work and drawing that he gave to his real friend with his heart.

From his first section “words, village, and heart”, you can see the journey of human civilization that change from the time with no boundary between transportation and method of communication to the age of internet as he says “electronic speed highway”. He makes his art work with insight of human civilization that communicates each other with basic method of communication words, many kinds of letters.

Lack of communication

Lack of communication

During my college year, I had a lot of fun things, above all, I would say the one of the most valuable and precious thing was tutorial time. Through this time, most of students included me, could learn and ask any questions to them during their art works and tutors gave us counsel and suggestion of direction at the same time. Moreover, they gave us information about students did not recognize. When I had fist tutorial, I got suggestion about association and possibility between my career works and Duchamp‘s works which completed ready-made concept. Because of tutorial, I was convinced about my significant college life. At my second tutorial, tutor told me that I should study about Karen Killimnik. While I studied her works, I was so pleasure that I almost cry out.

Finally, I can create my own art work affected from these artists with communication subject as a new “communication series # 3”.

The first art work is first impression about London Where I am going to study during 3 years is excited from my viewing land mark of London, high spirited with cosmopolitan life and lonely from particular weather of London, by which I felt chaos and subtlety. I depicted my mind which could not be established in London yet but still float on the atmosphere of London with view as an international student. I created my art work through luggage, from which I have opportunity to communicate with London as a media like canvas. Luggage is not just object but a vehicle through which I can connect to London and my alter ego contained my life story.

The second art work is door of communication. Compassionate communication skills can dramatically improve the quality of your life. Express concerns openly and honestly in a way that invites understanding instead of defensiveness. Develop empathetic understanding of others without compromising your own values. Even in situations of long-standing conflict or hostility, our communication process can open new doors to understanding and partnership.

When people are in conversation with each other not only speak with sound but also gaze eyes. Sometimes, even though between two persons talk about the same subject, someone lead the dialogue as a higher vantage position in perspective, and another person become a good listener with posture of heart by reducing.

Through main two art pieces with many exercise drawing, I can develop the range of my main subject, communication and would like to try to express these communication with not only just like now days painting techniques but also performance, installation, and image using digital technology. With these my attempt and new way to express my feelings, I create the third art work.

The third art work is “absence or lack of communication”, which expresses negative side of communication between creature and another creature. In other words, I show that people lives in trapped in the framework of communication and meaningless communication, these days, creating situation that having problems with different or distorted understanding as if the broken mirror cannot reflect object clearly when people try to communicate each other at the small stage frame. I express distance with difference of size of shape of human and with that he maximizes my topic “absence or lack of communication”.

Interesting point in this art work is that I try to install moving technology system which attracts for audiences to be able to feel curiosity with sound sensor when audiences make some sound.

Moreover, based on creating of performance and installation art field like Karne Kilimnik’s art work, I create small 3D space like performance stage with different two kinds of moving image as the same subject series. One is Morse signal (communication -.-. — — — ..- -. .. -.-. .- – .. — -.) designed as a key which means communication is the Key factor in human social life. And the other is world map combined with one white line designed as a USIM: universal subscriber identity module card that is installed in every different mobile phone, identifying every different person own self, which means all of world where different people live is connected with each other through modern communication system, mobile phone.

At my second tutorial, tutor told me that I should study about Karen Kilimnik. While I studied her works, I was so pleasure that I almost cry out.

Let me talk about her briefly. She became famous artist in New-York, Zurich, and Dublin with her exhibitions not in France and other Europe Countries. She refereed freely to the not only modern art, but paintings from past great man such as Constable, Reynold, and Goya. Also she referred to the culture, music, ballet, and decorative art. Futhermore, she was inspired by children’s story or fairy tale, legend, and modern pop culture’s icon for her works. Her installation work that was strongly reminiscent of very decorative stage for a play, was a combination of drawing of painting, picture, light, and sound. Her work received both reviews as neo-Romanticism and neo-Kitsch, at the same time.

Her traditional paintings genre, such as, portrait, indoor pictures, landscape, and still-life painting. are consisted with fantastic and romantic images. In her works, these kinds of images and stereotype, for example, historical figure, Hollywood stars, fictional characters from literatures and television, English house surrounded by grassland, and France country house is located in Loire and Fontainebleau Forest, are coexisted.

Her works, freewheelingly deal with anachronism and genre formation as little bit rudeness method, expressed criticism about our generation mass media’s brevity with contrast incompatible things such as, ordinary and strange, highbrow arts and pop culture, reality and fiction, and original and duplication or copy.

As I see world of her works, I was easy to find connection between mobile phone work. one of parts of mass communication system, and my work that draw picture with a lots kinds of pictorial expression of inside of communication theme. Like my tutor’s advice for my work, my works had always same expression mode as a romantic drawing, or the frame that very familiar, looks like on frame of the commercial. All things taken together, tutor’s suggestion about studying Karen Kilimnik was very thankful to me.

More funny thing is the are that her works reached. In 2011, she was in charge of l’Opéra de Paris stage art, It reminded my stage art work that I have done few years ago. Me and her had different expression method and subject, however we had similarity that challenging to solve many kinds of problems based on interest of mass media.

One more similarity with Karen Killmnik with me is energy. she has energy that she can handle tradition ways sweetly with diversity of many kinds of media outlets.
